Our aim with engine diagnostics is to be as non-intrusive as possible, we use the vehicle's sensors and computers combined with an electronic sensors of our own to help pin point or prove a diagnosis.
Some of the things we can do
- check sensor outputs - to verify the output of a sensor that may have an intermittent issue, or to see a missing tooth on a reluctor wheel for example
- check engine timing - Not only can we check timing without having to visually inspect, we can also look at chain stretch, tensioner and VVT issues.
- check engine compression - this can range from a quick global check to rule out compression to a more detailed in cylinder analysis or detection of head gasket issues.
- verify valve train operation - Looking at manifold, in cylinder and exhaust pressure waves
- identify noise issues - We can use electronic microphones to compare the timing or frequency of a noise with the engine activity at that time.
- confirm actuator actuation (not just supply voltage) -
- assess motor/pump state - is there a dead spot on a motor, what speed is it actually spinning at.
- diagnose spark issues - looking at primary and secondary spark voltages to give direction for diagnosis
- examine injector performance (petrol and diesel), we can see injector pulse width, actual open times, current draw
- battery and alternator performance - output, AC ripple, charge acceptance and crank voltage
- assess exhaust or cat blockages
